We adjusted the cord by six inches. Suddenly, the room clicked. That was when I realized lighting is geometry. It is about the invisible lines that connect us to our environment. Understanding these proportions will sharpen your design brain for any space, even if you are not hanging a lamp today.

01. The Dining Room Anchor

Hang your lamp too high, and the table feels ungrounded. Too low, and you're staring at a bulb instead of your guest.

Dining Proportion

84 – 90 cm (approx. 33 – 35 inches) above the table surface.

The Secret: For every 30 cm (1 foot) of ceiling above 2.4 meters (8 feet), add 7.5 cm (3 inches) to this height.

02. The Open Air

In open spaces, the priority is clearance. You want a statement piece that stays out of the way of your tallest guests.

Ground Clearance

214 cm (7 feet / 84 inches) minimum from the ground.

03. The Bedside Sanctuary

Bedroom lighting is about intimacy. The goal is a cocoon of light that does not glare while you are reclining.

Nightstand Placement

Pendant Lamps: 48 – 60 cm (19 – 23 inches) above the table.
Sconces: 45 – 53 cm (17 – 21 inches) above the table.

04. The Kitchen Island

Kitchen lighting is for tasks. We hang these slightly higher than dining pendants to keep the workspace open and the sightlines clear.

Task Height

91 – 106 cm (36 – 42 inches) from the counter to the bottom of the lamp.
